Our genealogical directory is directly derived from the platform used by Julien Dubé in his book entitled Dictionnaire des Familles Dubé. In this book, written in collaboration with his wife Marguerite Perron and published at the time of our Great Celebrations of 2000, Julien listed 9,500 couples. Charles-Henri Dubé, who had built an important database in the wake of Julien’s publication, compared the latter with other available tools, such as Linda Côté-Dubé’s compilations, and was the major initiator of the revision undertaken by our Board of Directors in April 2004. The Genealogical Team assembled at the time had a head start since it could immediately rely on both the data gathered by Charles-Henri and the files Julien readily made available without restriction. It was thus in a spirit of continuity that a newly-formed committee undertook the task with great resolve.
While initial plans covered a fifteen-month period, the work required a second year. By using new and powerful search software made available by genealogical societies, by scanning hundreds of directories (mainly for areas in the United States), by exchanging and validating data through new tools available on the Internet, by contacting members of the Association to obtain information concerning recent couples and by investigating complex cases using the paramount sources of information found in registers and censuses, the Team gathered and edited data in order to make an exhaustive directory in which 21,508 marriages and common-law unions are listed under 5,229 family groups. The directory now lists common-law unions which have produced descendants, as well as nearly all the persons who are members of the Association, even if unmarried. Here is a breakdown of the entries in the directory:

The structure of our directory allows an easy breakdown of the many thousands of couples according to their respective filiation to one of the sons of Mathurin, as shown in the following table:

Our data highlights Laurent’s very large progeny compared to Pierre’s. As for Louis, he had descendants from two marriages. Another important fact is that the Dubés of the first generations had an exceptionally close blood relationship since three of the Dubé brothers (Louis, Pierre and Laurent) married three Boucher sisters (Angélique, Marie-Thérèse and Geneviève).
The following table shows the family names of the spouses most often associated with a Dubé husband or wife. Not surprisingly, these spouses came from families having deep roots in the Lower St. Lawrence region, particularly the Rivière-Ouelle area.

The book entitled Les Descendants de Mathurin Dubé et Marie Campion includes the directory and index, as well as a well-documented history of the Dubés listed in the table above. The essential elements of this history are also displayed on our website under Our Ancestors tab.
In order to give Anglophones easier access to the directory and index, Fabien Dubé and his daughter Nathalie translated a 16-page extract drawn from the preliminary section of the book. This User’s Guide describes the building process of the directory and the mechanics for accessing the data displayed. This data, essentially consisting of proper names and numbers, remains generally identical in both French and English. Copies of the book are still available and may be purchased by clicking on the Boutique tab. Those who forward us documents written in English according to the criteria stated under Le Bé tab will be entitled to buy the book at the preferential price paid by our members. |
